Meizu Selects Audience Advanced Voice for MX4 Pro Smartphone
New Flagship Phone From Meizu Features Always-on Continuous VoiceQ With User-Selected Keywords

    AudienceNovember 19, 2014 9:15 AM

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 19, 2014) - Audience, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADNC), the leader in Advanced Voice and a pioneer in Multisensory processing and natural user experience technology for consumer devices, today announced that Meizu Technology Co., Ltd. ("Meizu") has selected the Audience eS704 Advanced Voice processor for its new MX4 Pro smartphone. The Meizu MX4 Pro will be available through China Mobile and China Unicom and was announced today at the 2014 Meizu product launch event "Think Higher" in the Beijing National Stadium.

The MX4 Pro features Audience continuous VoiceQ technology with user-selectable wake-up triggers or keywords. Audience Always-on continuous VoiceQ keeps the phone in an extremely low-power and "always listening" mode so it is ready to understand and immediately act upon verbal commands without the need to touch the phone. In the case of the MX4 Pro, the eS704 allows the user to take individualization a step further and personalize the device's wake-up keyword.

"Audience's innovations in Always-on technology made the eS704 a perfect choice for our new flagship phone, the MX4 Pro," said Mr. Yongxiang Bai, GM of Meizu. "Our customers are seeking elegant, functional design combined with a friendly, fun experience. The touchless and personalized wake-up enables the consumer to interact with their phone in a way that was previously unavailable."

The MX4 Pro is one of the first phones to feature the unique Meizu FLYME 4.0 adaptation of the Android 4.4.4 operating system. It also offers multiple modes with support for TD-LTE, FDD-LTE, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, and GSM networks. The phone features a 5.5-inch Super 2K screen and a Sony 2070w camera. Other hardware specifications include 3GB of RAM, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of ROM with a Samsung Exynos 5 Octa application processor.

"It's an honor to work with an innovator like Meizu on their flagship product as we see momentum for our eS700 series continue to grow," said Robert Schoenfield, vice president of Greater China, Audience. "Features like VoiceQ with user-defined keywords speak to the consumer demand for individuality and personalization. The call for truly natural user experiences is on the rise."

For the depressed doubters, and there are so many. This is maybe THE BEST info nuggets I have gotten recently. THis guys has a track record, he has told us who his friends are, he is working where now?

He does NOT work for Audience, he works for QUIK and we will read similar sort of items for the Eos one day soon. Great hire Andy and Brian, it nice to know we have such a KEY geogrpahy with such a capable person, now you guys can do other stuff!

commentary on incremental info and how to make use of it in a Bayesian analysis sort of way.

This is subjective probability work and hence it is my own adjustments based on some serious reading and why I generally do not put it out there as it won't work for anyone else...it will be a work in progress as we will have more news item to look at.

In subjective probabilities I had been forced to wearables and did not allow to much work on Smartphones. With this cc I will be expanding my reading into Smartphones.

Geography- I did consider the flurry of wins that did not mean much in TAM but held promise of activity in perhaps the best location of all-In China. Incremental info is that we are hard at work having an Eos loaded they way they want, with their in house algos. That will be HUGE IMO to grease the skids for a broad adoption there. I look forward to reading of this perhaps when the Eos is shipping they will put out this item. Huawei would be one fine win, as would Xiaomi. This is now adjacent possibe territory for me and 10 wins of the right ones are more important than 100 tier 2/3 wearables. I like the Huami folder more now as it is really adjacent possible..if we should read anything with them we have Xiaomi in the bag.

The spread in the Tier 1-the phrase that said a very significant expansion of the evaluation there suggests we have now moved from a wearable to smartphone considerations there. I am going to use this as a mental model of how other initial slots may well go, a trickle to a torrent. I understand and appreciate that like the job listing for the SEC Korea post that QUIK is putting a huge effort into making it right here. THey are NOT majoring in minor things..they are majoring in Major things. 10 of the right slots!

This is info I have hoped for, but did not allow myself to consider as adjacent possible till this cc.

Really took an initial liking of the new guy and that he knows China, a great addition to the people. So I reread this item...

QuickLogic Names Robert (Bob) Schoenfield as New Vice President of Worldwide Sales

SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/04/16 -- QuickLogic Corporation (NASDAQ: QUIK), a developer of ultra-low power programmable sensor processing, display bridge, and programmable logic solutions, today announced that Robert Schoenfield has joined the company as vice president of worldwide sales. Bringing an impressive track record over the last 25+ years, Schoenfield assumes responsibility for the company's entire sales organization.

Schoenfield comes to QuickLogic from Audience, Inc., a mobile voice and audio-processing company, where he was vice president of worldwide sales and managing director of China. Based in Shanghai, he was responsible for all customer operations, relationship management, and executing sales and distribution strategies to meet the unique market requirements of OEMs and partners around the world.

Prior to joining Audience, Schoenfield was vice president of sales for North America at Polaris Wireless, where he was responsible for revenue generation and managing customer relationships with wireless carriers, infrastructure providers, and other strategic partners. Prior to that, he was vice president of sales and marketing at Aeris Communications and also held various executive roles managing sales and business development for Tetra Tech, Inc., and Nextel Communications. Schoenfield holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from San Francisco State University.

"Bob's impressive sales executive background with top-tier mobile OEMs in our targeted market area and his deep system-level applications experience will enable him to make a significant and immediate contribution atQuickLogic," said Andy Pease,QuickLogic's president and CEO. "I believe with Bob leading our sales effort, we will accelerate our growth in the smartphone, wearable and IoT markets."

We have incremental info on this new guy from his small part in the cc. Impressive, solid, well spoken, I liked how China companies are faster to move than the others. Use this to evaluate QUIK as a going concern. He HAD a great JOB with Audience, he does NOT have to work at QUIK, he knows these markets well enough to make a very sound decision. He is putting his shoulder to the wheel for QUIK- his experience in managing China is HUGE as its not a place for the novice to try to understand how it works.

Consider he has done more in a month than we could have hoped for and that he can manage any budding relationship into a whole LOT more.

Thanks Bob S, for your joinging the company I am a part owner of, thanks for being on the cc so I could listen a little. I LIKE CHINA a lot. 5 Stars, bring them home for us. Thanks in advance.

Samsung's health ambitions go way beyond wearables

Samsung is probably not the first company that comes to mind when you think of healthcare.

Seeing the electronics giant release an experimental health-centric wearabletook many by surprise. But as Samsung continues to push into the health market, there's a lot more to its plan than fitness trackers and smartwatches.

The Simband and the Sami platform behind it signal a bigger shift within the company as it looks to broaden the reach of its hardware beyond day-to-day convenience.

Among the slew of announcements made during its developer conference in San Francisco this week was a new digital health platform — an overarching effort to help developers create new ways to track health information using the company's sensors and devices.

Samsung's Digital Health Initiative comprises two parts: The consumer-facing side, which includes the S Health platform announced earlier this year; and theresearch-focused side, which includes the sensor-filled Simband and the Sami platform that powers it.

"
We believe healthcare monitoring technology will encourage preventive healthcareWe believe healthcare monitoring technology will encourage preventive healthcare," Samsung President Won-Pyo Hong said during Wednesday's keynote.

That may not sound like a particularly bold statement, but it represents a significant shift, one that could set Samsung apart from competitors in the healthcare space. If the company does indeed move toward using its tech for preventive healthcare — rather than recreational data collection and tracking — it could change how consumers use their products.

"We know that wearables help us better monitor physical activity, but this is only one element of a digital health ecosystem," Hong said. "Samsung's digital health platform will help app developers, healthcare providers, hospitals, insurance and the pharmaceutical companies drive in an open environment that connects sensor technologies, devices and partners."

Samsung's research-focused Simband has six sensors that can track a wealth of bodily information but the company's approach to health isn't just about wearables.

IMAGE: MASHABLE, KARISSA BELL

Samsung is not the only company trying to establish itself on this front. Apple is also working on its own health platform with Healthkit. As it stands now, Healthkit is more a filing system for data collected by health and fitness apps, rather than a full-fledged ecosystem— though Apple's Health app certainly stands to evolve once the Apple Watch is available and integrated into the platform.

And Samsung's strategy is about much more than wearables alone. Each side of the company's health efforts is based on an open platform that enables partnerships between developers, hardware makers and researchers.
An emphasis on openness is a big part of what differentiates Samsung's approach from others. An emphasis on openness is a big part of what differentiates Samsung's approach from others.

Hence that SHEALTH page with compatible accessories some of which are S Gear devices.

"They are coming in very aggressively with an open API platform," Dr. John Mattison, chief information officer at Kaiser Permanente, toldMashable. "There’s no question that when you embrace a developer community with an open platform like Android, and you build on top of that increasing levels of open APIs, you liberate innovators to accelerate their innovation."

And when you combine an open developer-friendly environment with advanced sensors and tracking capabilities, this creates new opportunities for wearables to move beyond data collection alone. The key, Mattison said, is to be able to contextualize information for users and make data accessible for healthcare providers. If Samsung and others can successfully make this shift, then these platforms suddenly become much more powerful than step-trackers or diet aids.

"We don’t need digital nannies," Mattison said, saying that many wearables seem to collect information without adding value. "We need wearable sensors that help with mindfulness. If it doesn’t impact a decision, if it doesn’t change your behavior toward a healthy behavior, then it’s not going to impact your health in the long term."

It's still too early to know how Samsung's — or its competitors — efforts will pan out. Much depends on the success of the still nascent developer ecosystem and how the health care industry responds to these advancements.

But Samsung's emphasis on encouraging innovation by making its platforms accessible to developers stands to benefit everyone involved— and that's a very good thing.

Samsung Gear Fit2 confirmed on Samsung's own website
Gear IconX also appears as S Health supported device

The rumoured Samsung Gear Fit2 and the Gear IconX wireless earbuds have seemingly been officially confirmed; having already popped up on Samsung's own website.

The two new fitness devices are currently listed as supported accessories for the Korean company's S Health platform. There's nothing in the way of specs or pricing but we do get to see our first official pics.

The Gear Fit2 certainly looks more watch like than its predecessor and appears to feature a new textured strap. The image of the Gear IconX (below) appears to pretty much confirm the leaked images we reported on last week were the real deal.

The Gear IconX is tipped to be a fitness tracker and music player in one minus the trailing wires. It's expected to feature touch controls and will come with a dust and water resistant design. There's also going to be 4GB of onboard storage to pile on your music and a charging case to keep them powered on the move.

So it looks like Samsung hasn't abandoned its Gear Fit fitness tracker after all and. Last week, pics that were said to come from someone who's testing the next gen tracker revealed the the same 1.84-inch curved AMOLED touchscreen will still be in tow. It appears the overall design will be tweaked to make it slightly more curved and ergonomic.

Essential readingHow to use your fitness tracker to actually get fit

The biggest new feature addition, according to the insider, will be onboard GPS, so you can track activities like running without piggybacking off your smartphone GPS. That also means it's going to be more of a direct rival for theMicrosoft Band 2, which is one of the few fitness tracker/smartwatch hybrids to pack GPS.

Apart from that, there's not much else we know at the moment. There's a good chance Samsung would switch up to Tizen, simply because it's starting to show it more love with the Gear S2 smartwatch.

The Samsung Gear Fit2 and Gear IconX on the Samsung website

The first Gear Fit launched in 2014 with its curved AMOLED touchscreen and a built in heart rate monitor while Samsung made the odd decision to use a new RT OS (real time operating system). Here's hoping Samsung has addressed some of the biggest issues with its predecessor, which largely revolved around the software and the accuracy of the sensors. The battery life wasn't great either.

Images of the Gear Fit 2 recently leaked

There's no details on how much the Gear Fit2 is going to cost or when it's going to launch. The original device launched in February 2014, so it seems likely that we'll see it some time later this year.

We're also still waiting to hear more about the rumoured Samsung Triathlon budget fitness tracker after images of the device surfaced earlier this year. Clearly Samsung has plenty of wearable tech in development.

    Bob said…

One product was called an "accessory", while the other was called "device". The first customer was called a "top five", the second a "top-tier". Could this be a case of some creative writing by Mr. Paul McWilliam's in order to discuss both without tying the two together? Seems reasonable to me.

IF so, and IF the tier-one brings the product to market,

currently listed as supported accessories for the Korean company's S Health platform.

So they are calling both of these things accessories in the article…

fitness bands and ear buds are accessories and it will be coming to market as its Samsungs web site and they should know?

    time will tell.
