  1. In the coffee house of sensor fusion the adjacent possible is being discussed and the necessary bits and pieces are being traded around
    so that they are ready to get put together in novel ways.

    In my digressive reading I was really happy with the Huami file, that they are investing BIG time in the rare algo chefs, not in China
    but with a leasurely 10 min drive from QUIK HQ.

    Samsung, known as SEC in Korea, is moving the mobile device along with a BIG step forward in the specs on the rumored Fit2 device.

    Position Description


    As an Algorithms Engineer, you will develop innovative algorithms for real-time processing of physiological data from ECG, PPG, Accelerometers, Bio impedance, and others.


    With your expertise in developing biometrics algorithms you will devise approaches to signal processing and parameter estimation to develop new biometrics algorithms. You will use your modelling and analysis skills to develop integrated data analytics to transform these biometrics into relevant, useful physiological information.

    We want intelligence on the device, machine learning on the device, one layer, then the cloud, their Fit2 is just the start of it for them-
    For any doubters, there will be duplicates, and we really want this evolution to be there- QUIK has it on the Eos2 roadmap.



    To achieve this you will drive the algorithm development process from end to end: defining experiments for data collection and work with the data collection team to ensure appropriate data is available, perform data analysis and modelling, build and leverage partnerships with physiological and clinical experts in the understanding and interpretation of data results, and use your specific expertise to translate from data to end algorithm.


    Further you will leverage your experience with real-time firmware/software development on embedded systems such as those in the ARM family of processors to integrate your new algorithms into the real-time embedded systems.

    You will additionally have the opportunity to contribute to the team roadmap and potentially grow into a technical leadership role.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop novel algorithms for signal processing, feature extraction, and data analysis and integration of biometrics information using data from physiological sensors
    • Collaborate with embedded software teams to define related control logic for sensor scheduling specific to the needs of the algorithms.
    • Design ofexperiments for data collection for empirical data analysis and to assess real-time algorithm performance
    • Troubleshooting system performance issues
    • Implementing software for algorithms on platform
    Qualifications and Experiences

    • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or equivalent disciplines, or equivalent years of experience in signal processing and data analysis domain, with a demonstrable mathematical and statistical foundation
    • Thorough understanding of signal processing for novel-feature extraction and the ability to apply these to non-standard (e.g., quasi-periodic) signals
    • Ability to apply data analytics skills to identify new and/or difficult relationships in complex/confusing datasets
    • Experience developing algorithms under constraints for both real-time embedded and cloud-based target systems
    • Expert knowledge of Matlab (or similar)
    • “Plusses” for:
    -Extensive knowledge in biometric signals for estimating blood pressure and in blood pressure- regulating physiology (++)

    -A background in biomedical engineering and broad experience with physiological signals

    -Exposure to machine learning techniques (e.g., classifiers, supervised /unsupervised, clustering, dimensionality reduction)

    -Knowledge of estimation and control techniques (e.g., Kalman Filters, Particle Filters, Hidden Markov Models)

    Useful, but reading suggests the Sensory approach of a neural network at an order of magnitude lower power is the FUTURE here..and will separate from the highlighted text above.


    -Experience with automated MATLAB/Simulink to C/C++ code generation, Simulink, and Embedded C/C++

    Samsung's upcoming fitness band the Gear Fit 2 may be released by next month in South Korea followed by a worldwide release, according to latest reports. The Gear Fit 2 will replace the current Gear Fit version that was released in 2014.
    Korean outlet Pulse news reports that a source has said that Samsung has finished the development process for the device and is on track for launching most likely in June. Recently, images of the upcoming smartband were leaked on the internet showing off its new technology.




    The device has been in the news for a while now as it is slated to be the first of its kind fitness band with a bio-processor, which will provide users with a wider range of health-based statistics like body fat, skeletal muscle mass, heart rate, heart rhythm, skin temperature and galvanic skin response (GSR). In addition to that, it will provide a detailed breakdown of organ measurements, an electrocardiogram showing heart activity and a graph showing skin temperature.
    The Gear Fit 2 is also expected to have a built-in GPS to allow users to track their outdoor activities. Recent photo and specs leaks also suggest the device will sport a 1.84-inch AMOLED display and an internal memory of 4GB.
    The fitness strap will be made of rubber which is expected to be more flexible than its predecessor. The device may also be waterproof. Some Samsung devices sport the IP68 technology which allows a device to be submerged in over 1.5-metres of cold water for 30 consecutive minutes.

    Note how far advanced this thing may well be.... more than almost anything else I have read about. This is a step forward in wearables....new sesnors, new algos, very interesting.

    suggests incremental changes in probability... that QUIK has hired (really filled fast )in the same territory for a wearable that is the most advanced large market TAM wearable that is rumored to be seen first in KOREA.

    A new report by the Boston Consulting Group confirms and quantifies what those of us living in South Korea have known for a long time. This nation is the world's most advanced mobile economy. The report singles out three countries that are reaping the greatest rewards from the mobile economy: South Korea, the U.S. and China. It notes that "South Korea has quickly become the world’s most advanced mobile economy, having embraced 3G and 4G since their onset. Mobile represents 11 percent of the country’s GDP, valued at $143 billion.



    South Korea is a leading actor across all phases of the mobile value chain, particularly in its high-value segments such as design and production of devices and components.




    A strong focus on R&D and bold investments in nascent technologies, such as semiconductors in the 1980s and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) two decades later, helped South Korean players take the lead in design and manufacturing operations."
    As shown in Exhibit 4 from the report (click to see a full size version of the graphic), the six countries analyzed have a combined mobile GDP (mGDP) of more than $1.2 trillion and those same countries account for 47 percent of global GDP. In Korea, the mGDP accounts for 11 percent of the national GDP. Also, as noted in the report and shown clearly in the graphic (light green shading on the bar for Korea) "For nations with high production relative to domestic consumption, such as South Korea, exports are a major, if not the main, driver of mGDP. Countries with the strongest mGDP also tend to have unique capabilities within the highest-value portions of the mobile industry—intellectual property (IP) innovators, device manufacturers, and component designers—enabling high net exports.     The stage is set and I like that a Tier 1 does not sneak a most advanced wearable into a small contry in Africa to try it out, rather it rolls first with the most advanced palce there is...

  5. If this wearable gets bundled with smartphones, there could be some very good volumes. Keep your fingers and toes crossed so bundling becomes the marketing tool offered for the distribution of this product.

    For the depressed doubters, and there are so many. This is maybe THE BEST info nuggets I have gotten recently. THis guys has a track record, he has told us who his friends are, he is working where now?

    He does NOT work for Audience, he works for QUIK and we will read similar sort of items for the Eos one day soon. Great hire Andy and Brian, it nice to know we have such a KEY geogrpahy with such a capable person, now you guys can do other stuff!

This is subjective probability work and hence it is my own adjustments based on some serious reading and why I generally do not put it out there as it won't work for anyone else...it will be a work in progress as we will have more news item to look at.


In subjective probabilities I had been forced to wearables and did not allow to much work on Smartphones. With this cc I will be expanding my reading into Smartphones.

Geography- I did consider the flurry of wins that did not mean much in TAM but held promise of activity in perhaps the best location of all-In China. Incremental info is that we are hard at work having an Eos loaded they way they want, with their in house algos. That will be HUGE IMO to grease the skids for a broad adoption there. I look forward to reading of this perhaps when the Eos is shipping they will put out this item. Huawei would be one fine win, as would Xiaomi. This is now adjacent possibe territory for me and 10 wins of the right ones are more important than 100 tier 2/3 wearables. I like the Huami folder more now as it is really adjacent possible..if we should read anything with them we have Xiaomi in the bag.

The spread in the Tier 1-the phrase that said a very significant expansion of the evaluation there suggests we have now moved from a wearable to smartphone considerations there. I am going to use this as a mental model of how other initial slots may well go, a trickle to a torrent. I understand and appreciate that like the job listing for the SEC Korea post that QUIK is putting a huge effort into making it right here. THey are NOT majoring in minor things..they are majoring in Major things. 10 of the right slots!

This is info I have hoped for, but did not allow myself to consider as adjacent possible till this cc.

Really took an initial liking of the new guy and that he knows China, a great addition to the people. So I reread this item...

We have incremental info on this new guy from his small part in the cc. Impressive, solid, well spoken, I liked how China companies are faster to move than the others. Use this to evaluate QUIK as a going concern. He HAD a great JOB with Audience, he does NOT have to work at QUIK, he knows these markets well enough to make a very sound decision. He is putting his shoulder to the wheel for QUIK- his experience in managing China is HUGE as its not a place for the novice to try to understand how it works. 

Consider he has done more in a month than we could have hoped for and that he can manage any budding relationship into a whole LOT more.
