Naver is also constantly referred to as 'the Google of South Korea'.[4]

    By Jun Ji-hyeNaver will stop selecting and arranging news articles on its main portal page and news section later this year, to handle criticism about its neutrality, the firm's CEO said Wednesday. "From the third quarter, Naver will stop editing a list of news articles," Han Seong-sook said in a press conference in Seoul.Naver will instead give each media company authority to select and arrange its stories to be displayed on the nation's top portal."Naver will offer media companies related advertising revenue and data on readers," Han said.The announcement came amid mounting controversy over an opinion-rigging scandal, in which a "power blogger" nicknamed Druking and two of his followers allegedly manipulated voting on news articles and reader comments displayed by the web portal in an attempt to manipulate public sentiment in favor of or against certain political figures.Han said the company has discussed structural problems involving the ongoing controversy and came up with measures to improve this.She noted one of the core problems was structure whereby its 30 million users concentrated on a few "top stories" selected by the portal. Han said the improvement measures were designed to diversify ways for users to read the news. Naver will also remove a list of articles from its start page and provide only a search engine feature there, Han said. This will be applied from the third quarter as well.News articles selected by media companies will be located on a second page, and users can select certain media firms to read their stories. "This measure is to offer users news articles selected in accordance with each media firm's editorial rights," Han said. "Users will be able to read more diverse news articles that match with their interests."The firm will create another news section powered by its artificial intelligence (AI) news recommendation technology, AiRS. The CEO also said the firm will actively push to introduce the outlink system used by major portals such as Google. Some politicians have called on the Korean firm to use this system, claiming it is more effective at preventing opinion-rigging.Under the current "inlink" system, Naver hosts articles and runs the comments section within its website, in contrast to an outlink system that links users to a specific article hosted on the website of a media company. "In principle, I agree with the need to introduce the outlink system," Han said. "But it is difficult to adopt the system comprehensively as media companies have differing opinions. We will actively push to introduce the system through consultation with each firm."She added it was premature to talk about when the relevant guidelines for such a system will be drawn up as there was much to be discussed. However, Rep. Kim Kyung-jin of the Party for Democracy and Peace said Naver's improvement measures still seem insufficient. If the portal gives each media firm a choice on whether to move to the outlink system, not many companies will join it as the influence of Naver's platform is still powerful, the first-term lawmaker claimed.

    Naver is following in the footsteps of Google in its hardware business strategy, focusing on combining its big data expertise with artificial intelligence (AI).

    In a two-day developer conference which began Monday, the company showcased a series of technological and robotic prototypes for use in daily life. They include the wearable device AKI that can track the locations of users' children in real-time. The nation's top portal operator highlighted that the smart device, set to be commercialized next January, comes with its global positioning system and location-understanding technologies.

    This comes a year after Naver unveiled its AI speaker, Wave.

    Google also launched its AI speaker, Google Home, and a string of AI-powered smart hardware — such as Pixel smartphones equipped with the voice Google Assistant. The software is compatible with major Android smartphones.

    "Naver has been developing robots that are practical and helpful to people's living space under the goal of creating robots that will take part in human life," Naver chief technology officer Song Chang-hyun said in a speech during the DEVIEW annual conference.

    "Crucial research areas for robots are mobility that enables hardware to freely move in the living space and with AI that understands regular patterns of daily life. AI-driven robots feature the capability to furnish labor services for its owners."

    The exhibition of its robot technology implies that Naver, which started its business as a search portal operator, is expanding its presence into the AI-combined hardware industry to brace for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

    The drive comes at a time when Google is seeking to enhance its relatively-weak hardware profile.

    Last year, the company unveiled its new high-end Android smartphones, smart speakers and other gadgets in an attempt to take on leading hardware companies such as Apple and Samsung. The flagship Pixel handsets from Google have yet to generate tangible outcomes, falling short of stealing the limelight from smartphone leaders Apple and Samsung Electronics.

    For this reason, the company is all-out to scout tech manpower from Samsung and other manufacturing titans.

    On its way to tackle Google, however, Naver has adopted a distinct theme stressing pragmatic hardware that perceives the environment of its users to naturally provide necessary information and services for them.

    The robot arm Ambidex, for instance, is expected to be used in cooking, laundry, serving, nursing and rehabilitation, all of which are related to daily life. Another robot exhibited during the conference, Around, is used to pick up and carry books in bookstores enhancing the convenience of people.

    Naver also announced it will improve its automotive technology up to "level four," which refers to the position where machines can control every aspect of in-vehicle driving procedures, except for destination-setting and driving modes. None of the tech titans and research bodies have yet to reach this level.

    Naver is expanding its business into the hardware sector in a move to build what it calls a "connected platform" by converging the company's software-driven technology.

    The nation's top portal operator said Monday that it will invest 100 billion won ($84.7 million) in developing robots and establishing smart home-based ecosystems.

    Given that the company has focused solely on software since it was founded in 1999, the move reflects its drive to meet growing demand for Internet of Things (IoT) related products.

    "We will push for research and development (R&D) in the hardware sector including mobility, robotics and smart homes," said Naver chief technology officer Song Chang-hyun, during the company's annual developer conference "DEVIEW 2015" at the COEX, southern Seoul.

    Naver has been holding the nation's largest information and technology centered conference annually since 2008. More than 2,000 developers from home and abroad participated in the two-day event.

    "By teaming up with conglomerates and small and medium-sized companies, we will conduct joint research to lead the technological revolution in the global market," he said.

    The so-called "BLUE" project will be led by Naver Labs, the portal company's R&D center, for five years.

    Renowned robotics engineer Dennis Hong will join the project to share his technological expertise and develop IoT-related robots, the company said.

    Expectations are that Naver Labs can establish the connected platform with Naver's big data-based application technology which it has developed for more than a decade.

    The DEVIEW 2015 consists of 48 sessions on the latest technological trends including robots, big data and tech startups.


    Naver Line on Apple Watch

    At one of the sessions, Naver unveiled why it decided to provide its messenger app service LINE on the Apple Watch.

    "There have been demands for the LINE service to be operated in other smart watches before the Apple Watch was released in September last year," said Kang Yoon-sik, a developer at LINE Plus, the operator of the LINE service.

    "But we reached an internal consensus to incorporate our service on the Apple Watch as we thought it would be something big in the wearable device market," he said. "That's why we decided to launch the LINE application for it."

    He said the company had expected that the Apple Watch would be simply a small-sized version of an iPhone.

    "But it was not. Users touched home screen buttons less frequently than smart phones, and they were less likely to use applications with the device," he said.

    "One thing we realized was that they did not mind checking notifications on their Apple Watch."

    LINE Plus decided to shift its focus into providing a simple notification interface for them.

    "After improving the interface in the simplest form, we have received favorable responses from Apple Watch customers who use our service."

    Naver is not just a search engine operator anymore - it manufactures robots, develops autonomous cars and produces wearable devices.

    At its annual IT technology conference, DEVIEW, Naver announced Monday that it would extend its service outside the search engine platform through an “ambient intelligence initiative,” which refers to an environment where electronic devices react sensitively to people’s needs and provide desired products or services.

    “Naver is doing research on technology that can enhance people’s lives by understand their environments and possibility,” said Song Chang-hyun, chief technology officer at Naver during the conference.



    The IT giant unveiled nine types of robots at the IT event, most of which have been solely developed by Naver. It showcased a self-driving robot named Around, which is developed to move around indoors and is equipped with 360-degree cameras and three-dimensional razor scanners so it can map its environment and detect obstacles lying ahead.

    Naver also unveiled Aircart, an electronic cart equipped with physical human-robot interaction so that users can easily control the cart’s movement through the sensors attached on the handle. Around and Aircart will be test run at the Yes24 bookstore in Busan. The date of their official public launch has not been decided.

    In collaboration with Korea Tech, Naver also unveiled a robotic arm called Ambidex, which is lighter than a human arm, unlike most robotic arms being currently used.

    “[Ambidex, which has] similar joint structure as a human arm, will be able to do meticulous jobs such as cooking, cleaning, serving and nursing,” the company said in a statement.

    Naver is also offering something new in the internet realm, the company’s specialty. In its attempt to enhance the internet-user experience, Naver launched its first-ever internet platform, Whale, a service Naver has been developing for the past five years.

    Whale enables the user to divide the browser screen so that two pages can be simultaneously shown on a single page. The browser is also, of course, intimately linked to Naver’s existing services such as its translation program, Papago, and search engine, Naver.

    Whale officially launched on Monday for Windows and Apple computers, and its smartphone version is slated to launch in December.

    Naver is also getting into the automotive industry. On the back of obtaining the Transport Ministry’s approval to test run self-driving vehicles on road for the first time as an IT company, Naver said it will reach Level 4 in autonomous driving by the end of this year, a level whereby a car drives itself even when a driver is not there to intervene. The IT company is currently collaborating with Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology to work on technology that can extract data from signboards precisely and rapidly, even in metropolitan areas.

    NAVER LABS has signed a Memo of Understanding with HERE to develop autonomous 3D indoor maps. Key to the creation of these maps is NAVER LABS Scalable & Semantic Indoor Mapping (SSIM) technology.

    The development of indoor maps relies heavily on human manual work making them not only lengthy and expensive, but also difficult to keep up to date. Our advanced SSIM technology is going to provide an efficient solution to automatically update Points of Interest (POI) in indoor environments where the information changes all the time.
    The blueprint for autonomous indoor mapping with HERE and SSIM is as follows:

    • A 3D high resolution map is created with the laser scanner and high-performance camera of the mapping robot M1 which moves across the indoor area
    • Data on the indoor space is continuously collected by the AROUND service robot
    • The data AROUND collects is then analyzed by AI technology which detects any changes in the environment and updates the service in real time. We expect this automatic solution to revolutionize how indoor maps are created and maintained.

    Together with HERE, we’re ahead of the proof of concept of advanced SSIM. Thanks to this project we’ll be maturing the SSIM technology and expect to develop a cornerstone for indoor map construction and the foundation of future innovations.

    Naver's mobile messenger Line will be mounted as a default option on Samsung Electronics' smartwatch Galaxy Gear to be scheduled for release in October. Naver announced on September 5 that its Line will be provided as a basic app for Samsung's smartwatch Galaxy Gear.


    The Line features that are available on the Galaxy Gear version include free reception of voice calls, message indications, reply using stickers, and the on/off setting for chatting rooms. However, voice calls or message sending will not be available.


    To interlock Line between the smartphone and smartwatch, users need to download dedicated application (tentatively called “Line Watch Manager”).


    The Line app for the Galaxy Gear is available only for those who use Line through Samsung smartphones (Android operating system). The users of other devices will be able to use it in the future on a gradual basis.

    Over the past ten years, 19,900 people have participated, and 298 domestic and international companies and academics have shared their experience and knowledge through 364 sessions. This year, applications for the conference got closed in only 15 seconds, proving the high interest and enthusiasm of the participants.

    Naver Labs has been pursuing research on space and movement, and presented the wearable device, AKI, which focuses on location positioning and understanding technology. AKI utilizes spatial information technology developed by Naver Labs’ own WPS data, which enables accurate location information to be confirmed even in an indoor space where GPS signal is weak. Machine learning can provide more accurate information to detect place, time, and situation. They plan to add technology and functions with the target of launching next January.

    Being in this device that was created at Naver labs.

    Its the same as being on the R & D benches of Amazon's lab 126, being used in a device.
    They know it very well ( the Eos S3 )and they have many other things to make.......

    there is reason to believe that AMZN is the large company mentioned in the past as the one with the very restrictive NDA that is working with QUIK on some developments. Remember, nothing was mentioned about that engagement specifically in yesterday's conference call, but the name Amazon has begun to be mentioned quite frequently by QUIK in the past two conference calls - as has the trade name Alexa.


    That would be... A =1 Z =26 ;A to Z or Lab 126.

    Now that would be so impressive?

    ambient intelligence....in the cc QUIK spoke of a spread of QuikAI tm. The ecosystem in place is serious industrial IoT- they can take what they learn and go to eFPGA IP, but Facebook is on record in the archives of this forum with not only their Babbage sort of crazy indulgences ( thought reading) but they want inference on the mobile device and QUIK mentioned in the call of a consumer company interested in the FPGA of the Eos just for AI on consumer devices.....

    Margin was mentioned in the cc. Intelligence is paid for / chip and the M & A value also goes up.


    Adjacent possible comes up as you have to have the bits and pieces on the bench to put together....we are on the bench at Naver and we want to be on the R & D bench at Lab 126 also. the intelligence angle will drive the funnel larger and put the Eos on more R & D benches.


    for the casual reader....to run intelligence algos on traditional compute devices like DSPs or neural networks?

    What blew me away was the descriptions of their power usage not in %ages, but it was described as, "orders of magnitude less power".

    Interestingly, some of the larger app companies that we have been working with have expanded their business models to include product design. As a result, we’ve recently turned what was initiated as an ecosystem partnership into a new wearable design win where our EOS S3 is used as an always-on sensor processor. I recently met with the CEO from the products group of this company to discuss this new designand his outlook for the future. A key takeaway from our conversation is that our heterogeneous multi-core architecture and eFPGA in the EOS S3 Sensor Processing Platform is the right architecture to enable the more immersive experiences the wearable market needs


    We have numerous ongoing engagements with app companies, and believe this strategy has very significant potential to drive new design wins.


    Use Naver as the mental model. We are on a bench there and they are an R & D lab, like Amazons lab 126. These are the crucibles of creativity where the echo was created and where the next echo will come from also. Not a flash in the pan.

    Will these places want to use the FPGA for AI too? Yes!

    For casual readers....every culture is different. S Korea is often written of by those in the know as THE most advanced mobile nation on this planet. Naver is based in this culture and perhaps that is why they are so much bigger than the nations small size. Naver is tier 1.
