Spice & Celkon pre-load Alibaba-backed smart remote app Peel

Peel Technologies, makers of the smart remote control app Peel, has tied-up with Spice and Celkon to pre-bundle the app on smartphones manufactured by them. Peel already has similar tie-ups with HTC, Samsung and Xolo.

The California-based company secured $50 million investment from the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, earlier this month. Peel planned to use the funds to expand their products lineup and move from home entertainment to the smart home segment. The company had previously raised $45 million over four rounds, since it was founded in 2009.

Peel also claimed that it currently has over 100 million global users. Note that Peel counts its users as anyone who initiated registration on its app, so the 100 million user statistic is not a correct measure of how many people actually use the app on a regular basis. In India, there are over 1 million activated Peel users.
Peel works with more than 3500 TVs and provides remote control services that feature TV listings. The app also allows users to customize settings on their remotes and has apparently generated more than 50 billion smart remote commands after pairing with 60 million televisions. Currently, the app is available for Android and iOS platforms. Peel has tied up with TV companies such as LG and Samsung, DTH providers such as Airtel, Tata Sky, DishTV, Hathway, Den and Siti Cable.
Earlier this year, the company had launched the Peel.in platform, a search engine for shows that allows TV networks to share URLs on Twitter and Facebook which can be accessed by Peel users to stream that particular show on their device.
