On GTAT

I think it also says something about Apple. Who knows how far from the target road map GTAT fell..
Apple may have asked for some of its money back, he muses:
While this is utterly unexpected we believe this is tied to possibly Apple requesting prepayment of some loans due to GTAT not meeting performance targets related to sapphire manufacturing. When Apple announced its new products on 9/9/2014, it was clear that GTAT might have to revise down their revenues from sapphire in 2014 as sapphire was used in watches and not in phones. But even after accounting for this, this outcome is radical and totally unanticipated. We believe that Apple may have requested some payment earlier than expected as some unmet performance targets by GTAT. However, what we do not understand is why the two companies did not restructure the agreement to buy some time for GTAT and how did this relationship potentially breakdown to this extent. As a result we are forced to suspend our rating as we try our best to decipher this situation. We will be doing just that in next few days and weeks to untie this knotty issue to find the underlying reason for this action by the company.
Better for GTAT to have stayed small and grow in baby steps organically as opportunity allowed than to build the 578 million factory? Use your own money, if margin is bad this leverage was an equal disaster.

Time frame issues? When on the cutting edge doing things that have not been done before the result is uncertain and road maps slip?

Apple does use some Sapphire glass the watch…who will supply that now?
Imagaine that plant just sitting there with nothing to make. Who wants a home Saphire glass workshop? better not go to the auction.

Apple Invents Break & Shock Resistant Sapphire Cover Glass for Future iDevices such as the iPhone and iPad
The newly revealed Sport Collection of the Apple Watch that is coming to market in 2015 will be using a new kind of cover glass called Ion-X glass which has been patently strengthened. This strengthening process was first uncovered by Patently Apple in an August report covering this patent pending invention. This week, another patent pending invention came to light in Europe about strengthening sapphire glass for larger cover display glass that Apple may use for future iDevices such as the iPhone and iPad.

Apple Invents a Second Sapphire Glass Strengthening Process
Buried in a sea of Apple patent applications that were published earlier this week by the US Patent & Trademark Office, an Apple invention for an alternative method for strengthening sapphire glass came to light. On September seventeenth I posted a report titled “LG Wins Contract for AMOLED Apple Watch Displays & Apple Fulfills Patent,” which showed that the new Apple Watch was using a new patent pending sapphire glass strengthening process that we first covered in a report in August using ion steaming. In Apple’s latest patent pending invention, we see that a secondary engineering team has worked on an alternative sapphire glass strengthening process. Whether their new process will work itself across the entire Apple Watch family over time or is being aimed for future cover glass applications for the iPhone and iPad is unknown at this time.

Apple Reveals a Multi-Step Process to Strengthen Sapphire Glass in a New European Patent Filing
Yesterday an Apple patent filing published in Europe revealed a new multi-step process that will strengthen sapphire for future Apple devices and parts like the cover glass found in the iPhone’s Home Button that protects the fingerprint scanner from scratches that could affect fingerprint verification. While our report only skims the surface of this highly technical patent application, it definitely goes to show you the lengths that team Apple will go to explore, invent a deliver cool products for the high-end of the market who appreciate original craftsmanship.

Maybe its just part of the Patent wars so Samsung or Google don’t get it first, but just how broad a front to they have on the evolution of the mobile device…they will commission a whole factory and then pull the plug on it, as they do parallel developement in house on the adjacent possible of the glass used in their devices
as the above item speaks of…

Commentary, Yes I read mostly about the mobile device, QUIK, etc. I use the above in some indirect way as a mental model to make real the response that QUIK has used
all through the years when asked about Apple….paraphrase, We are working hard in the Android ecosystem, but are not focused on the Apple ecosystem…………spot on if using this as a mental model?
