This expansion comes as Lab126 tests connected-home devices that could open up a new front in its war against Google and Apple, two people familiar with Lab126's activities said recently.

This year alone, Google paid $3.2 billion for the smart-thermostat developer Nest Labs

Alibaba Invests $50 Million in TV-Remote App Startup Peel

Alibaba has designs on both the entertainment, and the home smart control spaces, and Peel addresses both – its app can control not only most TVs and set-top boxes out there, but also air conditioners and smart appliances. Alibaba launched a smart TV and set-top box platform in 2013, and a smart home IoT platform in 2014, so it definitely has expressed interest in Peel’s specific market of opportunity. Considering this investment is larger than all of Peel’s existing funding combined, I’d say we see a close working relationship between these two going forward.

Say a small company said they got a piece of silicon on Nest thermostat.

QUIK getting on the PEEL platform is better than that?

That may be true.
